SCRATCHED FURNITURE
To conceal scratches on mahogany or walnut furniture, you should rub linseed oil on the wood in the direction of the grain, if a table is of brown mahogany, apply a little permanganate solution —one teaspoonful of permanganate dissolved in a pint of water, with a fine camel-hair brush. If it is of red mahogany, dissolve a very little bismarck brown aniline powder in alcohol, and use instead of the other solution. If it is too red when dry, paint with a weaker solution of permanganate. Finish by polishing the table as usual. The only thing you can do about scratches is to conceal them as far as you can. It is impossible to eradicate them unless you have the wood planed and resurfaced.
