MODEL SEASON OPENS NEW BOATS. PARTICIPATE MORE CRAFT BEING BUILT BT SPINDRIFT A number of now boats made their first appearance at the opening of the Ponsonbv Model Yacht • Club's season last week. In the 4ft. class Lena, Lion Oil and Okero tried conclusions with tho speedy Bullet, and in the 3ft. class Billy Boy was given a successful trial. Tho weather conditions, although rather cold, were suitable foi model yachting, a fresh northerly wind prevailing throughout tho afternoon, with fairly smooth water.
Starting from scratch in tho 3ft. class, Billy Boy had the misfortune to run into a launch, which put her out of action for a few minutes. Her skipper, A. Bell, effected repairs and sho continued tho race. Sho sailed a good course on the beat to windward, and overhauled all her rivals except Billy, which finished first, but lost the first prize through fouling the finishing buoy. Billy Boy was placed first. In the race for allcomers, Billy Boy was given a handicap of 6m, and sho had no difficult in winning.
A good deal of interest was taken in tho contest for 4ft. models. Last year's champion, Bullet, was pitted against tho new models Lena, Lion Oil and Okero, and also the Orakei model, Sea Spray. Lena, Okere and Sea Spray did well at tho start, but Lion Oil and Bullet were not sailing up to expectations, especially Lion Oil. Toward the finish, however, Lion Oil greatly improved her position, and overhauled all her rivals except Lena, which crossed tho finishing line lm 31s ahead of her. Bullet finished 2m 57s after Lion Oil, with Okere 18s further astern. Sea Spray retired.
Tho new boats, with tho exception of Lion Oil, again met Bullet in the allcomers race, and although they had no chance with the handicap boats on time allowance Lena and Okere had the satisfaction of beating Bullet across the finishing lino, Lena by 50s and Okere by •Is. Mr. G. S. Miller, of Devonport, is building a 15ft. by 4ft. runabout for his own uso. Sho has been constructed on the latest American lines, and will be suitable for either an inboard or an outboard engine. Mr. W. H. Stanaway has expressed his intention of standing for this office. Keen rivalry is anticipated for tho remaining positions, for which several nominations have already been received.
