OBITUARY

MRS. A. E. D. AUBIN The death occurred yesterday at tha residence of her son, Dr. E. B. Aubin, Parnell Road, of Mrs. Anne Elizabeth Dolbel Aubin, widow of the late Mr. John Aubin, of Pirongia, at the age of 92 years. Mrs. Aubin, who formerly was Miss Lempriere, was horn on tho island of Jersey, Channel Islands, and was educated in France. In May, 1865. she came to New Zealand to marry Mr. Aubin, who also was a former resident of Jersey. Mr. Aubin died many years ago. The wedding was the first to be celebrated in the first Anglican Church built at Ngaruawahia. From Ngaruawahia they went to live at Alexandra, now known as Pirongia, where Mr. Aubin pursued his business interests. Their home there was for 60 years the centre of the musical and literary interests of the town. Mrs. Aubin, who had wide interests, was particularly associated with the work of the Church at Prrongia, and it was owing to her great enthusiasm that the Church was able to continue its work through several periods of stress.Although the Maori War had finished there were frequent alarms in the early days of their residence in the district, and often the. women and children were hurried to the refuge of the church, which, was built inside the fortifications. For the past two years Mrs. Aubin had lived in Auckland with her son. She is survived by two sons. Dr. Aubin, Auckland, and Mr. E. H. Aubin, Kawhia, and .three daughters, airs. Ramsay, Hamilton, Mrs. Bell, Pirongia, and Miss Aubin, Auckland. There are 21 grandchildren and nine great-grand-children. MR. ARTHUR OWEN [BY TELEGRAPH OWN* CORRESPONDENT] - TVHANGAREI, Friday The death occurred this morning athis residenco at'Poroti, of Mr. Arthur Owen, aged 75 years. He was born in Lincolnshire and camd to New Zealand 57 years ago. Almost immediately after arrival he commenced work on tho gumfields with Mr. Geoffrey Hunter. Two years later he was appointed buying agent for the late Mr. James Harrison. Subsequently he became a partner of Mr. Samuel Rawnslev, bringing in gum from all parts of the North for export. Mr. Owen had numerous experiences in tho early days as the country was very wild. He had narrow escapes from starvation when getting lost, as settlers were few and far between. Later he took charge of the Kaikou store and commenced in additiou bush work on land leased from Maoris. Among his many managers Mr. Tau Henare, M.P-» was considered to be his most competent. After several years Mr. Owen took over the Poroti Hotel,"which he controlled for about ten years until a family bereavement took him to England, from which country he toured America and Australia. Upon his return ho was employed in Mr. R awnsley's gum store in Auckland. Shortly afterward he e'Sablished a bakery business a.t Kawliia. Ho soon returned: to tho North and purchased the Poroti store, which ho has conducted for the past 25 years. Ho married a Maori chieftainess of tho Uriroroi tribe, who died several years ago. Of their ten children nine aro still living. FATHER S. MAHONEY [by telegraph—rriEss association] WELLINGTON', Friday Tho death occurred at Wellington today of Father Stanislaus Mahoney. Ho was born in London in 1866 and camo to New Zealand with his parents. Ho was ordained priest in 1893, subsequently working in Christchurch, Hokitika, Nelson and Wanganui.
