THEFT OF BLANKETS The theft of four blankets, valued at £l, from a boarding house, was admitted in tho Polico Court yesterday by Frederick Smith, aged 27, labourer. De-tective-Sergeant O'Sullivan said accused had set out from Auckland to walk back to Hokianga and had taken the blankets in his suitcase. Accused was fined £l, in default four days' imprisonment. Appearing on a charge of breach of probation, Alexander Ferris, aged 19, labourer (Mr. Noble) was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. "He has been warned previously about not complving with tho terms of his probation," said Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., "and has evidently not appreciated the leniency shown to him." A cliargo of stealing two petrol drums, valued at £5, from premises in Stanley Bay, was admitted by Richard Thomas Carroll, appearing on summons. It was stated tho drums had been sold for 25s each. Accused was fined £7 10s and ordered to make restitution of £5, in default, three months' imprisonment. He was allowed 14 days in which to pay. "Even if the incident was only a 'friendly argument,' it is apparent accused created a distinct disturbance, which was such as to cause an outside observer to report it to the police," said tho magistrate in convicting James William Payne (Mr. Dickson) on a charge of disorderly behaviour in Newton on July 16 Ho was fined £l, with costs.
