CONSTABLE KILLED
ABORIGINE'S SPEAR COMPANION'S ESCAPE Official advice received by the Australian Government of the spearing by Northern Territory aborigines of Constable A. S. McColl, states that another member of the party, Constable Malioney, had a narrow escape, a spear passing through his hat. Constable McColl was a member of tho polico party sent to Caledon pay to endeavour to arrest the aborigines implicated in tho murder of several Japanese last year, and was speared to death by the natives on August J. Tho party was on Woodah Island, where tho jungle is very thick. Tho latest advice received from tne mission at Groote Eylandt indicates that the party was returning to tho Roper liiver station. Groote Lylandt is in tsuch by wireless with the Australian Inland Mission lieadquarteia at Cloncurry. Woodah island, where Constable McColl was murdered, is a small island in Caledon Bay not usually marked on maps. When news was received of tho murder of tho Japanese it was felt that they had been intruding where they were not wanted. Public feeling has been aroused by the death of Constable McColl. The murder is regarded as a challenge to the white mans authority in the north.
