CRICKET IN ENGLAND
WEST INDIES ELEVEN MATCH AGAINST KENT LONDON, Aug. 23 The West Indies cricketers to-day began a match against Kent at Canterbury. The county batted first and made 331 runs (Knott 154 not out and Ames 86). The visitors had mado 45 for three wickets when stumps were drawn for tho day. NICKNAME FOR JARDINE JOCULAR APPLICATION "MONSTER FROM ANTIPODES" LONDON, Auk. 17 "Tho Monster from the Antipodes— Caveman Douglas, tho Killer," was the jesting introduction of D. R. Jardine by Sir John Squire, as chairman of a literary luncheon at Grosvenor House. In replying, Jardino said: "I have been called a notorious character, but there are quite a lot of us, although some, liko Crippen, arc no moro." Jardino added that cricket was one of the few sports which had not been speeded up. "I say that with deference to tho pace of tho English bowling. It is a nico, leisurely pastime for players and spectators, but it is important in tho hurried world of tho futuro that tho romance of sport should bo adequately represented. "Many cricketers to-day write well about tho green grass and tho conversation of tho crowd, but wo want a genius who can accurately picture tho Australian barracker in full cry." Sir John, referring to the report that Jardino will never captain England again, said: "I know you all want him to continue skippering England for tho next 10 years." (Cheers.)
