PROPOSED GOLF LINKS
SCHEME AT HAMILTON NO SUPPORT FROM COUNCIL [from oxtr own correspondent] . HAMILTON. Thursday A proposal that im 18-liole municipal golf course should be constructed between Navlor Street and the Waikato River at Hamilton East was placed before the Hamilton Borough Council last evening by Mr. H. T. Gillies. The area proposed to be utilised included the park land known as Hayes' Paddock, the rifle range reserve and sections vested in the commissioner of Crown lands, the Borough Council and the Domain Board. Prices for taking over the existing leases were submitted. Excluding the cost of labour, Mr. Gillies estimated the construction costs at £2304 and the maintenance costs at £964 a year. Receipts were estimated at £IO4O a year. In addition to the costs mentioned, £IOOO should be provided for reticulating the greens with a water service, and £3OO for a man's time and for fertiliser and benzine.
Mr. Gillies said the proposed course could be made second to none in New Zealand. The country wns eminently suited for golf, and it could bo made extremely attractive. He had no doubt the course could bo made directly selfsupporting, and indirectly it would increase the value of all other lands in the vicinity. The council decided that it could not givo financial support to the project.
