THE SANDERS CUP

Sir, —It is only fair to state that Mr. Palmer, chairman of thr Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association, called upon mo just prior to tlio meeting of the association, held on August 15, when ho informed me that the Southern centres would not race for tho Sanders Cup, and there was nothing to do but to hand the cup hack to the donors. He assured me at the same time the matter would be discussed at tho next meeting of the association, and other proposals would lie put before me. To substantiate this, practically the same statement was made by Mr. Palmer at the meeting, as reported in the newspapers, when he said Canterbury would send the cup back to the f m —the Auckland Association, and they would have no option but to hand it back to the donors. Mr. E. H. Northeroft, following Mr. Palmer's remarks, said: '"While deploring tho break-away of the Southern centres, the 14ft. class was not an Auckland class, and was now almost dead here." [s it not reasonable, therefoie, for me to have taken the view thai the intention of the Auckland Association was to hand the cup back? Therefore, I communicated with the New Zealand Yaching Council, who 1 had been told by Mr. Palmer would not race for the cup. The reply of the council to this was that they were prepared to carry ou the contest as in the past, and they hoped in a short time a broader view would be taken in Auckland anrl the present disagreement entirely forgotten. J. Hwlop.
