FLOODING AT ORAKEI
CLAIM BY MAORIS An extraordinary downpour of rain at Orakei not long ago was the cause of a claim received by the City Council last evening from Maoris at Orakei, who asked for compensation for damage to crops from flood-water overflowing from Reihana Street. The city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, reported that the storm water drainage in the street was adequate, but on the day in question the downpour was abnormal, almost amounting to a cloudburst, and tho cesspits had not been able to cope with it. An inspection showed that considerable damage had been done to tho road surfaces along a defined line. Under the circumstances ho recommended that all liability be disclaimed. Tho council adopted the city engineer's recommendation.
