CITY LOAN PROPOSALS

APPEAL TO BUSINESS MEN PERSONAL INTEREST NEEDED "One of the most amazing features of public life in Auckland is the apathy many business men, with large interests at stake in the city, display when polls or elections are held," said Mr. H. P. Burton, chairman of the Works Committee of tho City Council, in an address to members of the Karangahape Road Business Promotion Society at a luncheon yesterday. He appealed to those present not only to vote for the present proposals but also to persuade other business men to do so. "It is well known," be added, "that those who are opposed to a proposal seldom fail to vote, while those in favour usually leave tho voting to the other fellow."

Mr. Burton explained the necessity for the various works to be undertaken with the loan money and said that the opportunity of securing the Unemployment Board's wages subsidy in connection with such valuable works was one that it would be criminal to miss. The incx-eased spending power of the men engaged under tho schemes would have a direct and beneficial effect on the shopkeepers themselves, while there would be no added charge on tho ratepayers.

Mr. L. O'Mallev, who presided, and Mr. M. J. Bennett, who was present after a considerable absence from tho society's meetings tlirough illness, also spoko in favour of the loan proposals, and Mr. J. S. Brigham, town clerk, explained points that had been raised.
