CIVIC SQUARE LEASES
COMPENSATION QUESTION COUNCIL TO MAKE PAYMENTS Tho leases of several properties in Grey's Avenue, Cook Street and Albert Street, owned bv the City Council and forming part of tho Civic Square Hick, will expire next month. Compensation is payable to tho lessees to tho extent of one-third of tho value of the buildings. The council last evening approved tho pavment of sums of £SBO, £525, £SOO and £325 respectively to four lessees, with whom tho Property Committee had concluded settlements for the amounts stated, making a total of £1930. It was resolved that offers of £BIO and £lB3 respectively bo made, without prejudice, to two other lessees, subject to arbitration in tho event of non-acceptance. A claim for £1374 by another lessee, to whom £716 had been offered, was left for arbitration, and Mr. N. Wade was appointed the council's arbitrator. It was resolved to disclaim liability for compensation in respect of another building that had been erected on a property during tho currency of the lease and after tho demolition of ono that had formerly occupied the site.
