SUBURBAN THEATRE

HERNE BAY PERMIT TOWN-PLANNING ASPECT Permission to erect a picture theatre on tho northern side of Jervois Boad, nearly midway between Sentinel and Hamilton Poads, was granted by the City Council last evening to Mr. Wenzl Scholium. It was pointed out by tho city engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, that tho frontages on this side of the street were almost entirely residential in character, while the southern side was largely occupied by shops. In the zoning scheme for Heme Bay and Ponsonby adopted by tho council in April, 1930, this property was included in tho area to be. reserved for residential purposes, so that the desired permit could only bo granted with the permission of the council. However, as the Town Planning Board had decided in favour of a portion of the old tram depot site on the same side of the street being used for commercial purposes, it would bo difficult to establish a case if tho desired permit were withheld. He felt, however, that the residential character of tho northern side should be retained. In view of the decision of the Town Planning Board tho Town Planning Committee of tho council recommended that tho application bo granted, and this was adopted. The committee, however, also expressed tho opinion that the residential character of that side of tho street should be preserved. The theatre, which is to bo built under an arrangement between Mr. Scholium and Amalgamated Theatres, Limited, will bo constructed on tho latest lines and will have seating accommodation for nearly 900 people.
