EARNINGS OF RAILWAYS
DETAILED JULY RETURN PROFIT OVER £15,500 HIGHER [by TELEGRAF.1 —OWN* correspondent] WELLINGTON. Thursday The abstract of tho railway working account for tho four-wceklv period ended July 22 gives in full the results concerning which a preliminary statement was made by tho chairman of tho Government Railway Board on August 11. As indicated then, there was an improvement of more than £15,500, compared with the corresponding period last year, a working profit of £20,034 compared with one of £4467. The gross revenue was £412,435, which was £11,910 more than a year atgo, and expenses were reduced by £3657 to £392,401. The operating account for the North Island lines shows a revenue of £212,914, an increase of £11,299, and expenses totalling £208,677, a reduction of £7467. There was a profit of £4237, compared with a loss of £14,529 last year. The receipts of the South Island railways were £149,797, an increase of £2787, and expenses were £156,601, an increase of £2439. There was a working loss of £6804, compared with £7152 last year.
The balance of miscellaneous revenue Was £22,601, as against £26,148 in 1932. The revenue was £49,724 and the expenditure £27,123.
For the period from April 1 to July 22 the net revenue was £232,082, compared with £196,720 last year. Tho gross revenue was £1,807,657, a decline of £9428. The expenditure was £1,575,575, a reduction of £14,790.
