THE SANDERS CUP

Sir, —May I be permitted to congratulate Mr. Hislop on his action in donating the Sanders Cup to the NewZealand Yachting Council. It seems to be the first constructive step in a lamentable disagreement. The only thing that now remains to patch up the differences is for Auckland to send a strong crew south to challenge for the cup this year, and to bring it home again. Mr. Palmer states that his obstructionist actions have the support of the majority of Auckland yachtsmen. I venture to contradict him. I don't think he has. I think a lot of yachtsmen are, like myself, disgusted with all this sea lawyer business. I, for one, feel ashamed that an association in the Queen City of New Zealand can adopt such a small-minded, if not highhanded, attitude. We think Auckland is the yachting centre of New Zealand. So it is. Then, if we want to bring back tho Sanders Cup for Auckland, surely there is no need to squeeze tho other centres out of the race in order to secure a win. We should bo able to go south, sail a fair race and drive tho Auckland boat first across the line. Como on, Auckland! drop the "dog-in-the-manger" atitudc; forget the small differences and race in the true sporting spirit that should characterise the Sanders Cup, at least. J. Bkooke. Devon port.
