SURF LIFE-SAVING

TRIBUTE TO CENTRE'S WORK PRESENTATION OF AWARDS The work of the Auckland Hood Centre of the Royal Life-saving Society was praised by the Mayor, Mr. G. W. Hutchison, at the annual meeting of the centre last evening. Mr Hutchison, who is viccpatron of the centre, was welcomed to the meeting by the chairman of the executive. Mr. L. Brighton. In replying to this welcome Mr. Hutchison expressed pleasure at being present. Ho said lie was particularly interested in the work of the society. With tlio co-operation of life-saving clubs, the centre, which had been granted control of beaches by tho City Council early in the year, had done much good wcrk. "I have perused this report with the greatest interest and have seen that a considerable amount of energy has been put into tho affairs o£ the centre," said Mr. Hutchison in moving the adoption of the centre's annual report. "Particularly pleasing." he continued, "is the number of passes, 12G2, awarded during tho 1932-33 season. These successes indicate that excellent work has been done." Later Mr. Hutchison referred to the centre's accounts, which showed a binall surplus, "dt seems to me," hs> said, "that a society such a3 this is more deserving of financial support. Now that 1 rosperity Week is over, if members of the committee approached leading citizens and brought to their notice the aims of the society, they might give assistance. .Because of its functions, particularly the patrol of beaches, the centre should grow stronger year by year." , , . The report was adopted alter an amendment had been made crediting the Auckland Girls' Grammar School, instead of tne Diocesan Girls' High School, with tho highest number of passes. On behalf of the Central Executive in London Air. Hutchison presented the distinguished service medal and certificate, tne highest award of the society, to Messrs. M. 10. Champion and A.
