SURPRISES IN ROAD RACES B. G. SHARP'S FINE RECORD Almost ideal conditions prevailed last Saturday for the road races conducted by the five local amateur cycling clubs. The Manukau Club's senior race of 25 miles, in which 25 riders competed, was an event of surprises. Good mutual pacing between L. M. Nicholson and J. W. Clark, bpth off 3m 455, enabled them to finish first and second respectively, only eight seconds ahead of a fast overhauling bunch of five riders. It was Nicholson's initial placing this season, while Clark had previously two seconds credited to him. A great surprise was created by H. I?. Dwight, lm 30s, who gained fastest time in 70m 21s. Entering the tenth and final lap Dwight and his co-marker E. F. Ruper were 19 seconds slower than the scratch pair, L. H. Dwight. and R. G. Foubister. H. R. Dwight was competing in his second club raco this year. ' 11. G. Foiibistcr, scr, had not raced on tho circuit since May last, but nevertheless he gave a good display and paced along with L. H. Dwight, only to bp beaten by a few lengths by tho latter rider in the sprint. h. .T. Foubister, brother of the Manuknu Club's scratch rider, gained his second win this year in tho Papatoetoo Club's 18 miles time trial unpaced event. His time of 59m 50s for the hilly circuit was only 22 seconds slower than that of R. L. Francis, who gained time honours. B. G. Sharp, scratch rider of tho Takapuna Club, has exceeded all records this season in connection witli time honours. In nine successive races he has been fastest rider. Ho rode the 30 miles course on Saturday in 81m 15s to reduce his previous record by 45 seconds. \V. Pcarco, 4m 30s, winner of tho previous week's raco of 26 miles, off 10m, again secured first place. Another promising Takapuna Club rider is R. Jones, the scratch junior, who secured his fifth successive fastest time award on Saturday when he rode the Hi miles in 32in 435. He has also won two races from scratch. An easy victory was gained by K. J. Banks in the Lynndale Club's races. He won tho 25 miles event from the 2m 30s mark, by lm 3s from H. Norris, 6m 15s, and in addition returned the best time of tho 11 riders who started. Ho rodo the 25 miles in 77m Is and broke the course record previously held by V. Harris by 3ra 31s. Banks won his club's 18J miles raco tho previous week off lm 455. Riding off the limit mark of 5m 15s in the Auckland Club's 12 miles race, W. E. Perks scored his initial win this year. He led throughout and won easily by lm 29s from L. Phillips, 2m. R. T. Taylor, scr, was successful in defeating R. Arvidson for fastest time honours. Taylor only recently transferred from the junior ranks, where ho was outstanding. Information has been received from tho Wellington Cycling Centre that November 18 has been fixed as the date thiß year for the annual Palmerston North to Wellington road race of 102 milea.
