THE WAIKATO RIVER
NEED FOR CONTROL BOARD INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE [FIIOM OUR OWN* COHRESPONBEN-T] HAMILTON, Wednesday A conference of county council chairmen and engineers was held at Ng.iruawahia to-dav to consider the control of tho Waikato and Waipa Rivers. Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P., who presided, said thjit since the Waikato River Board had ceased to function serious deterioration had occurred in the Waikato River. Willows had grown unchecked and many islands had formed in the channel. Tributaries needed maintenance work to keep the willows under control and dredging was necessary to maintain navigation. Mr. Massey said a River Conservation Board was wanted and suggested that county council engineers should propare a report for consideration by the local bodies concerned. He added that tho Government was interested to a great extent as the drainage of a largo area ot land was involved. It was decided that the suggested investigation should be made, that tho Government report which had beon prepared be obtained and tho whole project considered further by the local bodies of the Waikato.
