ROOP-E ROOSTER SEMI-FINAL RICHMOND DEFEATS MARIST MARGIN OF TEN POINTS The semi-final of fhe Auckland Rugby League's Roope Rooster knock-out competition was played at Carlaw Park on Saturday, when Richmond defeated Morist by 10 points to nil after a hard and fast game. Richmond will now moet City in tho final next Saturday week. After heavy rain during tho week the ground whs in surprisingly good order und except for a strong sun overhead, conditions were ideal. The match was watched by a large crowd. Richmond -was on top practically from tho start and never let up. Its forwards were superior, but the Marist pack put up a valiant showing and there were many keon and hard exchanges between the vanguards. Fast breaking from tho scrums and very sound tackling hampered the play of the inside backs, who frequently made errors. However, considering tho hard nature of the play and the iuat pace set many of tiles© were excusable. Cooke played a fine game for .the winners and it seemed that Marist made an error in concentrating so much upon h»m. The splendid delence of Prentico was another feature and he was euccessiul in bottling up Brisbane throughout.

i.n tho second half Marist made deaporate efforts to swing its backs into action, but only once or twice appeared likely to break through a fine defence. The backs Allowed themselves to be crowded, thus making the tank of the opposition much easier. Campbell, fullback, played a splendid game. Great credit for Rjcnmond's win goes to its forwards, among whom Satherley and Lawless were outstanding. The latter played right up to his bent form. Laird and lvesen were very prominent in tho Marist vanguard. > The game was marred to a large extent by the referee failing to apply the advantage rule. Consequently play was repeatedly 1 held up. Marist attacked from tho kick-off, and wan awarded a penalty near the Richmond twenty-five. Campbell just missed the kick at goal. Cooke was prominent in a passing bout and found touch past halfway. Marist was awarded another penalty, and again Campbell missed from a good position. The Marist backs combined effectively, but Prentice saved a try with a fine, low tackle. Fast play followed, and RichmoncL was awarded a penalty. Marshall just missed the kick at goal. Cooke improved Richmond's position with a nice kick. From the resultant scrum, Hassan passed to Brisbane, but Lawless intercepted, and touched down by the posts. Marshall converted. From a scrum near half-way, Brisbane passed to Dunne, who burst through only to be taokled from behind by Prentice. A great goal by Cooke increased Richmond's Bcore. Marist won the ball from moat scrums, but Hassan repeatedly held on, and chances were lost. Richmond made great effort* to increase its score and from a scrum Prentice made a nice opening, but his pass to Marshall was high. Halftime came with score:—Richmond, 7; Marist, °. On resuming the Marist backs played good football. Brisbane made a nice opening, but List missed his pass from L. ScJjultz. Tho latter and Brisbane were associated in a nice passing bout, but Prentice saved with a low tackle. Fast play followed, the Marist backs attempting to open up the game. Richmond, however, defended ably. Prentice waa conspicuous in a fast run and kicked pust Campbell. B. Schultz, however, saved, well. Ivesen broke away and passed to B. Schultz, and Herring was pulled down five yards from the Richmond line. The Marist backs, with List prominent, drova back the opposition, but Abbott came fast and sayed a try. Young made a nice run to half-way J»nd passed to Cooke, who dropped the pass, and lost a_. try. Richmond was rewarded a few minutes later when Telforcf snapped up in the loose and scored a well-deserved try. Marshall failed to convert. Brilliant play by Cooke gave Richmond another chance, fie raced 40 yards and reverse passed to Marshall. Jenkinson took the next pa»B and just missed a try by a few yards. From a scrum, in the Richmond twenty-five. Hassan made a fine opening and Ivesen went close to scoring. The game ended with tho score:—Richmond, 10: Marist, 0. Mr. S. Billman was referee.
