DANCE AT TOWN HALL RESULT OF COMPETITIONS j PROCESSION THROUGH CITY CORONATION NEXT WEEK Entering its sixth day, Prosperity Week continues to bo tho chief topic of conversation for Aucklanders and public intcicst has been completely capturc-d by the energy and enthusiasm of the hosts of volunteer helpers. So far from weakening after their arduous labours in the cause of charity, the workers combined yestcfday to launch an even greater effort than beforo. A dance in tho Town Hall last nieht was attended by 1700 people, who were entertained until an early hour this morning to the strains of two dance bands. Considerable interest was taken in the dancing competitions, silver cups being awarded the winners, who were selected by popular vote. Tile results were: — Old-time waltz: Mrs. McLean and Mr. Weaver, 1; Miss Harriman and Mr. Morgan, 2; Miss Southgato and Mr. Doonan, 3. Junior championship: Miss Thornton and Mr. Latta, 1; Miss Jones and Mr. Jackson, 2; Miss_ Robinson and Mr. Elesmore, 3. Street Procession The blare of trumpets and the beating of drums heralded the approach or Prosperity Week procession through the streets of the city yesterday moraine. It is years since Queen Street and Kavangahapo Road saw such gaiet} and laughter. An imposing display by the Army, Navy and Airl'orce, with Miss Elizabeth Burget-Watson, United Services Queen, as Britannia, mounted on a beautifully caparisoned palfrey, led the procession from the loot ot Queen Street: She was preceded by two mounted lancers, flying red, white and blue pennants, and was followed by an escort 2>f soldiers alhd sailors, while overhead flew an aerial squadron from tho Hobsonville Air Base. Miss Fiona. Mackenzie, the Professions Queen, rode in a fire engine, behind which came a representation ot a smoking building. There followed a large number of trade displays on motor vehicles, many of them of, an amusing nature. Rosults of Judging Prizes were awarded as follows:Decorated commercial vehicle: Bond and Bond. Limited, " Teaspoon Tea, 1: Grev and Menzies, Limited, Tartan Dry," *2; S. L. P. Rinuner, Limited, " Daisy Coffee," 3. . Best decorated non - commercial vehicle: " H.M.S. Prosperity." Best decorated horse-drawn vehicle (non-commercial): Mr. W. Tucker. Most original decorated vehicle: The Old Cabin " (Electricity and Tramway Queen), 1; "Fire Brigade" (Professions Queen), 2; " Reverse car (Campbell Motors on behalf of Transport Queen), 3. Most humorous decorated vehicle: " Operating table " (science students on behalf of the Professions Queen), 1; "Galloping Gertie" (Transport Queen), 2; students' procession burlesque (Professions Queen), 3. A mock court conducted at the foot of Queen Street gave amusement to several hundreds of people during the lunch hour. All day long the Tramway Entertainers paraded the city streets in decorated motor lorries, giving openair concerts at numerous points, to the great enjoyment of large crowds of onlookers and tho financial benefit of the Prosperity Week- funds. Attractions For To-day To-day's attractions will be headed by the carnival of athletic and sporting events to be held this afternoon at Alexandra Park in aid of the Sports Queen, Miss Shirley Watkins. A varied programme will include trotting, wrestling, gymnastics, hunt races, boxing, cycling, an aerial display, an exhibition of fencing and a donkey race. A prize of a guinea will be given to the first person who finds "Mr. Prosperity." A children's party will be given by the Mayoress, Mrs. G. W. Hutchison, in the Town Hall this afternoon, when many hundreds of children will be entertained. A concert in aid of the Arts Queen will be held in the Regent Theatre to-morrow evening, when many' well-known local artists will contribute to a varied programme. In spite of its name, Prosperity Week will extend over two weeks, and a host of attractions has been arranged for next week, culminating in the coronation ceremony in the Town Hall on Friday, when the result of the voting will - be announced and the winning queen will be crowned. The box plan will open on Monday morning. Among next week's events will be a mock court and University Students' revue, to be held in the Town Hall concert chamber on Monday and Tuesday evenings. On Tuesday evening, also, will be held the "Back to Childhood" party in the Town Hall in aid of the Sports Queen. THE MAYOR'S FUND ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS The Mayor's fund in connection with Prosperity Week is growing steadily and additional contributions received total over £IOO.
