PLANTING OF TREES
DARGAVILLE ACTIVITIES [BV TELEGRAPH —own correspondent] DARGAVILLE, Thursday Arbor Day was celebrated in Dargaville yesterday, when a number of trees were planted in Selwyn Park, and a start was made with the first general scheme of street-planting recently decided upon by the Borough Council. At Selwyn Park the Mayor, Mr. F. A. Jones, assisted by a number of councillors, citizens and school children, planted an avenue of plane trees along the western and south-eastern boundaries of the park. The gathering afterwards adjourned to Victoria Street, where several English chestnut trees were plaiited along the footpath, the first tree planted being in memory of the late Mr. F. F. Day, Dargaville's first Mayor. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Jones said it was possibly a new experience for Northerners to be planting trees, as the past practice had been to cut trees down for commercial purposes. He hoped that now a start had been made the custom would be kept up, and that each year would see a further number of trees planted, not only by the Borough Council, but by private citizens. CEREMONY AT HAMILTON MEMBERS OF BOYS' CLUB [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Thursday An interesting ceremony took placo in Paraua Park this afternoon, when members of the Kahukura Boys' Club planted nine liquid amber trees. Fow, addressed the boys on the value of trees and referred to the interest the donor of the park, the late Mr. G. Parr, took in the trees of the park. The boys planted the trees, and were afterwards given refreshments.
