FAT STOCK MARKET

WEEKLY WESTFIELD' SALE SHEEP AGAIN DEARER STEADY PRICES FOR BEEF There was a steady demand for beef at tho weekly Westfield fat stock sale yesterday and values for both ox and cow beef were unchanged. Tho total yarding was about 750 head, compared with 650 head last week. Some choice quality lines were included in both sections of tho market. A consignment of 15 steers ex Frailkton sold up to £9 15s and netted tho excellent average of £9 9s 2d. In tho cow and heifer section, a lino of 32 well-finished heifers from Ohinewai mado up to £(3 and averaged £5 2s. A short yarding of sheep drew spirited competition and values advanced by from 3s to 4s a head for all prime sorts. Numbers were hardly sufficient for the requirements of the local trade. Prime wethers sold up to 34s a head and prime ewes up to 29s 9d. Top price in both eases was secured by consignments of well-finished Hydatids from tho Paerata district. Exporters operated to a limited extent for last year's lambs, which have now moved into the hogget class. Steady inquiry was maintainedand values were on a par with last week. A few pens of spring lambs were available, and these sold from ]"s to 33s Od, according to quality. The demand was not keen. A moderate supply of calves met with a, good demand. Prices for all wellfinished sorts were higher, plain calves selling at unchanged rates. There was a short yarding of pigs, but tho demand was slow and prices were a shade easier. VALUES AT HASTINGS ' MOST CLASSES EASIER [nv TELEGRAPH—PIIEBS ASSOCIATION'! HASTINGS, Wednesday A heavier yarding of fat cattle than for tlio past few weeks met with a perceptibly slucker market at the Stortford Lodge saleyards to-day, particularly on lighter finished lines. This was due to the increased yarding and the smaller amount of competition from export operators. With a smaller yarding the fall -would not have been so appurent. Bullocks. medium to prime, made £5 7s Gd- to £8 Gs; others, from £4; cows, medium to prime, £3 15s to £'s 6s; others, from £2 10s; heifers, medium to prime, £3 17s Gd to £5 17s; others, from £'2 15s. There was an enlry of 400 store cattle, the quality being less finished than of late. Values in this section of the sale also moved back, and in consequence a number of entries failed to meet the market.. Cow# made to £2 10s; bullocks and steerß, £3 to £4 14s. An average yarding oi' fat sheep met with a decidedly easier market, values declining considerably on last week's rates, the rates now ruling being practically the same as those of a fortnight ago. Ewes and wethers allowed the bifrgest decline in values, while jamb values varied unappreciably. This can be attributed almost entirely to lack of outside competition, no Wairarapa or Manawatu buyers acting to any great extent. The high scale values ruling at last week's sale induced a good entry, and a number of vendors were not prepared to accept the prices offering. Ewes, medium to prime, made 15s to 19s 3d; others, from 8s; wethers, medium to prime, 16s to 21b; others, from 14s; hoggets, medium to prime, 16s 9d to 22s 6d; others, from 13s. Store sheep met with n brighter market generally, values for breeding ewes, wethers and hoggets showing an improvement Whether this rise is temporary or not is difficult to stale, although some vendors anticipate that these rates will hold during the current month. Breeding ewes made 8s lOd to £1; wethers, Us lOd to 15s 6d: hoggets, 10s to 15s 9d. BRITISH WAR LOAN British Wireless RUGBY.
