PICTURES ON SUNDAYS Notice of his intention to move for the cancellation of the licence to screen pictures in' the Rialto Theatre oij Sundays -was given by Mr. R. E. Newport at a meeting of the Newmarket Borough .Council last evening. "The council should send a very strong letter to the proprietor," said tho Mayor, Mr. S. Donaldson, when a complaint was received from a ratepayer concerning the late hours maintained on one night by a skating rink in the borough. The complainant stated his wife, who was ill, had been kept awake until 1 a.m. by the noise of the panatrope. The clerk, Mr. H. Wilson, reported that on the particular evening, a private party had carried on rather late, although the public session at the rink had concluded at 11 o'clock. Mr. Wilsorl reported that 45.9 per cent of tho total rates struck durinc the .year had been collected to date. This represented £8475, leaving £10,258 outstanding. "Although tho percentage paid is slightly less than at this time last year, the position is really very gratifying," said Mr. Donaldson. "The ratepayers should be congratulated." Permission was granted to the Girl Guides' Association to make a collection of food, principally groceries, for the relief of distress, in the borough on August 30.
