ELLERSLIE HORSES

YESTERDAY'S TRACK WORK SPRINT BY DEPUTY RULER PROGRESS OF KOROKIO BY ARCHER As the result of a few fino days tho tracks at Ellerslie have dried considerably since the week-end and the No. 3 grass was iu good order for work yesterday, when tho weather conditions were excellent. On "the grass Dark Marble and Moreliu covered half a milo in 53 l-ss. Dark Marble was going the better at the finish and is none the worse for his race last Saturday, when he ran a very creditable second. Alpinus was under restraint while running half a milo with King Musk in 52 2-ss. Alpinus looks tightened up after his outing last Saturday, but infused ft lot of vim into his work and could have recorded better time.- King Musi' did not exert himself unduly, but should sharpen up when he gets some more sprinting. Kiltowyn went steadily over a round i.n 1.52 1-5, tho last six furlongs in 1.24. He is looking a picturo and will bo quite ready to race when required. Deputy Ruler had no difficulty in running half a mile in 52 2-ss. He is wintering splendidly and developing into a fine colt. As he wai little inferior to the best two-year-olds this year. Deputy Ruler appears a good prospect for tho new season. United and Caliente, after running the first two in 26 2-ss. completed five furlongs m 1.64-5. United failed after having every chance in the second division of the Parnell Handicap last Saturday and is proving very disappointing. Caliente also failed to do as well as expected, beginning slowly and never being dangerous. Korokio ran her first furlong in 13 1-os and finished up half a mile in 53 4-ss. She has not been asked any serious questions since coming to Ellerslie, but lias been accomplishing some useful work and is showing improved condition. It is probable that Korokio will have a .race at tho Pakuranga Hunt meeting next month, after which eho may go to Sydney if she trains on well. Catoma came through his race in the Waiatarua Hurdles really well and will bo kept in steady work with a view to tho spring meetings. It is more than likely that he will have his next outing at Avondale, but it is improbable that he will bo called upon to do much while tho tracks are firm through the summer, as ho does not relish such conditions. MoTe success as a hurdler awaits Catoma, who should bo racing in the best class next winter. The race he had in the July Handicap appears to have wrought imprpvement _in Lord Val and he now seems to be doing better than when he first came to Ellerslie a few weeks ago. Lord Val's effort last Saturday ■was very encouraging and it looks as if he will be an early winner for Mr. A. H. Long, who has just recently joined the ranks of owners. The rising two-year-old Prince Abb, by Dorio from Silk Tress, and Spear Court, by Spear Dance from Avoncourt, are thriviing on tho useful tasks they aro being allotted by F. Gilchrist and both aro showing improved condition. In appearance the rising two-year-old Tray Bit, by Tea Tray from Par Money, is one of the most improved horses of his age at headquarters, haying grown and thickened considerably since first _ taken in hand by G. Holland. Tray Bit infuses plenty of vim into his work and it will be interesting to see how he progresses in the next few months. W. J. McLEAN'S HORSES LUCESS FOR GRAND NATIONAL Unless present intentions are altered, the Matamata trainer W. J. McLean will take Lucess to Riccarton to keep his engagements in the Grand National Steeplechase and other races at the Canterbury Jockey Club's meeting next month. Lucess showed no dash when he raced at Ellerslie last Saturday, but tho exceptionally heavy state of the track was -against him and probably prevented him from displaying his best form. Last year, with 10.4, he was going- well in the lead when he fell_ at tho third to last fence in the Grand National Steeplechase, and with 9.13 should bo a possibility on this occasion, even though he is not a genuine stayer. It was originally intended that Luces 3 would be accompanied on the trip by his Btablemate Master Norval, who has an engagement in the Winter Cup. However, plans have been changed and it hss'now been definitely decided that Master Norval will not be sent to the meeting. Master Norval met with a slight mishap recently, and, following a course o£ physic, ,is on tho easy list.. . TAKANINI TRACK NEWS CHERRY KING'S PROGRESS Conditions at Takanini yesterday were good, but very little fast work was recorded, only a few horses sprinting o» the outside grass Cherry King (Wynd) was not doing his best to run three furlongs in 41s. He has wintered splendidly and is now being sent along a little faster in his work. Cherry King is one of the likeliest of this season's two-year-olds to show improvement as a three-year-old. „ Melhroney (Sharp) was a length clear of the Whirlwind—Marriage Bell colt (Walters) at tho end of three furlongs in 40 1-Ss. Melbroney is the three-year-old filly by Kilbroney—Miss Melva in W. Woods' charge. She hit out freely and. has done well considering tho short time eho has bee'n in work , , , Alignment, was given fast work along the back and then eased up to run on at a steady pace to the finishing-post. This colt has fined down during recent weeka and is doing his work in pleasing style. Gay Sheila. Tatyoon. Peter'a Pride, Misa Nicer, Orenda, Eldora, Speedmint and a number of others were allotted easy tasks. Arch Ruler received a kick under the knee when contesting the first division of the Parnell Handicap on Saturday. He has since been on the ca&y list, but ' J. G. Farrell does not anticipate any serious results. although the enforced stoppage of his preparation will probably cause him to miss the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. The hunter Orenda has been working a little short. The trouble is thought to be'' due -to a etrained muscle behind the shoulder, but it _ has not been serious enough to stop his work altogether. Gastronomy appears to be all the oetter for his race' on Saturday and he should progress well from now on. W. Patterson intends to give him his next race in the Ladies' Bracelet at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting. " PRINCE OF ORANGE DEPARTURE FOR RICCARTON On his way to Riccarton to compete at the Canterbury Jockev Cub's Grand National Meeting, the hurdler Princo of Orange was sent to Frankton in charge of his trainer. A. J. Julian, yesterday, Later in tho week ho will continue his journey in company with High Comimssioner. who also has engagements at the meeting. Prince of Orange is in great heart at. present, and. although he failed in the heavy ground at Ellerslie last Saturday, he may tako considerably more beating at Riccarton, where tho going does not get as heavy and the conditions are likely to suit him much better.
