EFFECT OF SHOPLIFTING
HIGHER PRICE OF GOODS MAGISTRATE'S OBSERVATIONS A representative of ono of Sydney s largo departmental stores lias concurred in the opinion expressed by a magistrate that the widespread practice of shoplifting caused an increase in Lho price of goods to honest customers. There was an unusually large number of charges concerning shoplifting heard at the Court, and in one of them the head of a largo firm was giving evidence against a woman when he was questioned by the magistrate. ''l suppose," said the magistrate, "that a tremendous amount of loss is incurred to business people through this sort of thing, and that the public also lose tho benefit of lower prices for commodities in consequence. I suppose that is one of the reasons why the public have to pay more for their goods than they otherwise would." Witness: I am confident that is so. The Magistratelt is a terrible thing that such a practico is indulged in, there not being even the excuse of poverty.
