MENTAL HOSPITAL
DANCE FOR PATIENTS Patients at the Auckland Mental Hospital were happily entertained at a fancy dress dance last evening by the medical superintendent, l)r. H. Buchanan, the matron, Miss Mayze, and members of the staff. The large hall in which the dance took place was brightly decorated with festoons of multi-coloured streamers, making an appropriate setting for the gay fancy dress costumes of the patients. Some of the patients chose their costumes from the hospital wardrobe, while others designed their own with great success. A number of outside friends had aisu assisted in the matter, of costumes, with the result that a splendid array of charming and original effects was to be seen. A grand march v.-as held early in the evening, Dr. Buchanan leading the procession. Members of the Y.M.C.A. Optimists' Club, under tho leadership of Mr. J. Wilson, Optimists' service scout, provided a number of concert items, including community singing, for which Mrs. Barrington Snow played the accompaniments. The patients joined heartily in . the choruses, such o d favourites as "Daisy Bell" and Lily of Laguna" proving particularly popular. Music for the dancing was provided by an orchestra arranged by Mr. E. E. Kitchener, and comprising Messrs. A. Smyth©, 13. Pay lor, W. Huzzy, W. Blackford and \V. Seal.
