PROGRESS OF WIRELESS
MARCONI ON THE FUTURE The Mardir.se Marconi, speaking nt j a luncheon of the Koynl Empire Society j in London recently, spoke of the pro- i irj-css made in wireless communication j ain | hinted at important developments* j He was at present engaged, he said, in a study of the so-called nncro-wavos, or waves "of under ono metre in length. These waves had already moro than justified the time spent in their investigation, and appeared to possess qualities of unsuspected importance. '• I have already been able to instal a circuit utilising these services for ordinary telephonic purposes which^ is uo\v operating 111 daily use in Italy. This is the first commercially operated circuit of this kind in the world. Later we may loolc for great developments in the realm of television. '• Of the many uses of wireless none is more appreciated or more universally employed than that of broadcasting." The developments in wireless of recent vears seemed little short of marvellous. With the steady advance of science there becamo possible a. progressive speeding-up in all directions, so that the investigation of to-day becamo the functioning instrument of tomorrow. Without the assistance and goodwill of big industrial enterprises and Governments the world would derive but little advantage from these inventions. Theso considerations applied particularly to the invisible network of wireless which encompassed the world to-day. Without the big companies wireless stations could never have been built and maintained. Without the goodwill and co-operation of Governments no international exchango of wireless messages would bo possible. "Wo have by no means exhausted the potentialities of wireless. Investigations arc still proceeding and improvements being made. Certain difficulties, such as those relating to atmospheric interference and fading, are becoming better understood and will probably in time be overcome."
