EMANCIPATION OF SLAVES CENTENARY OF HIS DEATH (Received July 25. 7.35 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, July 21 The centenary of the death of William Wilberforce, famed in connection with tho emancipation of slaves, was celebrated yesterday in Hull, his native city. There" was a civic procession and church services. A special service also was held in St. Paul's Cathedral, London. William Wilberforce was born in 1750 and died in 1833. He was the son of a Hull merchant. He entered Parliament in 1780 and in 17SD made the first of his many proposals in the Houso of Common's for the abolition of the slave trade. It was not until 1807 that the Act embodying these proposals was carried.
