ESCAPE FROM FIRE
MOTHER AND BABY DESTRUCTION OF HOME [by telegraph—owx correspondent]' PALMER STON NORTH, Wednesday Wlien her home at the Oturoa Soldier Settlement, a few miles south of Foxton, caught fire last evening Mrs. P. A. Lingard and her infant had a narrow escape from being trapped in the buying house. Shortly after six o'clock Mrs. Lingard was bathing the baby in the bath-, room, which was off the kitchen, and left for a moment to bring some clothes. which had been left drying on a rack above the kitchen range. As soon as she entered the kitchen sbo noticed smoke and on opening a door leading to the front of the bouse she was confronted by flames and smoke* She rushed back to the bathroom, seized the baby, and dashed from tho building, which in a very short time was reduced to ruins. It was rapossibJe to do anything to check the fl.jmes.. , - Mr. Lingard was milking in t»e cowshed some distance away and did not see the fire until the house was burning fiercely. •
