WAIKATO STOCK MARKET

BUOYANT TONE CONTINUES MILD WEATHER .CONDITIONS A very mild, week has further assisted to shorten the winter and paddocks look greener than usual at this season. Great buoyancy in the stock market still exists, although just why is not, so apparent, ?at le&st so far | as it concerns the store section. That values in this branch arc hardening each week cannot be doubted, and unless we are to be more fortunate with our products abroad than the signs of the moment indicate, winter crazing is certain to be less profitable than ■is customary. Recent hints concerning a butter quota have created a good deal of alarm, but have not cheeked the pursuit of dairy cattle, although springina heifers have eased a little in some localities. A decline, however, .at this period is not unusual and possibly bears no relation to the deliberations that nre at present takinc place. -Similarly, the check to the advance of lamb and wool has had no adverse influence on the' market here, indeed, sheep in all branches are as firm as ever with many seeking in vain for lines suitable to their fancy. Conditions as they affect the separate sections are:— BEEF Without showing any further -advance it can at least be said that the market continues solidly firm. The entry at the central yards wis weak in the -ox section, but a choice exhibit of heifer rand cow bepf fully compensated and satisfactorily -sup-, plied the need. Competition was firm throughout at-similar rates to those ruling' ■ a week ago. Prime ox made 1o 17s; ordinary. 14s to 15s; prime heifer, to 17s; young cow. 14s to 15s; ordinary cow. 10s to 12s; rough, 8s to 9s. MUTTON Another good entry came forward at the Prankton yards this week, but the -supply of lambs was very light in comparison with recent sales. Apparently the rush of these is past. Grown sheep were .very .firm ,and rather better values were-realised.'Best wethers made from 18s to 21s; medium, 16s to 17s 6d: plain, from 14s; best -ewes. 14s (Jd to 16s Gd;* medium, 12s 6d-to 13s 9d: plain, from 10s -3d; .good lambs, to 18s; medium. 14s 6d to 16s; lighter and plain, from 12s. STORE CATTLE Not for the past year or two have store catUe been -so eagerly sought at this period. Unfortunately, no lines of consequence are being displayed, hut there .can be no doubt that a -sizeable entry would attract buyers and probably set .-even a higher value standard than at .present exists. At the moment no item -suffers neg'ect, -even the inferior bred getting their full :*jhare of attention. The demand for Jersey yearlings seems as keen as ever r.nd some remarkably good sales have been witnessed during the week. .Present rates are;—*For--ward bullocks, £3 5s to £4; -store 'bullocks. i£'2 17s 6d to £3 10s; two-year -steers, £2 5s- to £2 15s: .yearlings. XI to J& 10s: forward cows. £2 to -£2 15s; stores, £1 -5s to ,£1 15s; Jersey yearling .heifers, .to £3; medium, £2 to £1 10s; small, from -£l5B. STORE SHEEP Competition is keen for everything in this section, although ewes in lamb buve .greatest .popularity. Ait -a recent clearing sale, where close on 1000 well-farmed--ewes were submitted, the .average realised was -close on 20s, .the young sheep making to 225. .Unfortunately, not many such lines jare -available, although more could readily be absorbed. Hoggets are still in good demand, although possibly not -quite eo firm -as ;tliey held ift few weeks ago. "Young ewes in lamb sell from 18s to 225; four and fiveyear, 15s to 17s (jd; aged, 12s to 14s; {forward wethers, 13s to 15s; forward ewes. 8s to 10s 6d: ewe hoggets (good). 14s -to 15s Gd-good wether hoggets, lis to 13s; medium hoggets, 8s- 6d to 10s; -small, from 7s. DAIRY CATTLE Competition at all clearing sales continues .strong and herd averages are well maintained. Heifers, except -choice lots and close to profit, rare not quite .so '-.keen in seome centres, although .at a -special -sale held in -the Te Aivamutu yards very /satisfactory rates were obtained, choice animals reaching as htsh as £9. This, however, is not common. Early calvins cows sell from £6 10s to £0: medium .quality, £5 to £6; "Inter calvers. £3 10s to £4 ,10s; best heifers. £6 to £7 10s; medium. £4 15s to £5 ss; backward, £3 5s to £4 10s. pros The volume of bi.-sine?s in -this section has greatly diminished, but competition is strong. Porkers at the Frankton yards this week advanced 3s to 4s a head, makins up to 38s. -
