OLD PITCAIRNER'S CAREER NINETY-SECOND BIRTHDAY [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT J NORFOLK ISLAND, July 8 Mr.. Cornelius Quintal ("Uncle Cornish"), ono of the remaining four Pitcairners and the oldest man on Norfolk Island, celebrated his 02nd birthday on June 17. Born on Pitcairn Island in 1811, he was the youngest son of Arthur and Mary (C'hristien) Quintail and came to Norfolk Island with tho Pitcairncrs in the migration of June, 1856, a lad 15 years of age. Ho is still a halo and vigorous man. In his younger days he was renowned throughout the Pacific as a wrestler. Maav a whaler put into Norfolk Island so that somo champion wrestler belonging; to tho crew might "have a go" at "Uncle Cornish" —only to suffer defeat. He was a famous swimmer and horseman. Somo wonderful aquatic rescues are credited to him. Ho still "sits" a horso like a Lifeguardsman. July 1 was, on Norfolk Island, as perfect a day as could be desired. As evening closed in, however, much lightning, with very heavy clouds approaching from two different directions, indicated a gathering storm. About seven o'clock there broke over a section of the island the heaviest hailstorm over experienced here. Fortunately, it lasted less than ten minutes. Jagged lumps of ice, sonic measuring 2in. in length and lin. thick, thundered on to the roofs, terrifying the children, who had never previously had such an experience. Vegotation suffered severely, kitchen vegetables boing cut to pieces. Much preparation was made for entertaining the officers and crew of H.M.S. Dunedin when she called hero on her way to Noumea and the NewHebrides. However, as a few mild cases of scarlet fever had broken out, it was doomed prudent for the ship's company not to land. Tho ship's commodoro and his aide paid au official visit to Government House and tho Administrator, Captain C, R. Pinney, returnod tho visit on the Dunedin. Tho fever outbreak has run its course and the schools havo been reopened.
