OBITUARY

MR. SAMUEL RUSSELL [from our OWN correspondent] HAMILTON, 'Wednesday The death occurred last evening of Mr. Samuel Russell, aged SO years, at his residence in Palmerston Street, Hamilton. Mr. Russell, who was born at Lower Hutt, left that district in 1891 to commence farming at Pahiattia. He became ono of the directors of the Ballanco Co-operative Dairy Factory, tho first co-operative dairy concern of its kind in New Zealand. Mr. Russell sold his property at Pahiatua in 1901 and moved to Palmerston North, where he resided for a number of years. He eventually moved to Auckland and took up his residence in Rcmuera. For some time he acted as Government valuer for the North Auckland Land Board under the returned soldiers' scheme. When in Auckland he was a member of the Carlton Bowling Club. About seven years ago he came to Hamilton, where he had since lived. Ho is survived by three sons, Mr. N. Russell, of Auckland, Mr. P. Russell, of Hamilton, and Mr. S. Russell, of Rotorua.

MRS. AGNES McINDOE [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON. "Wednesday The death occurred in Hamilton today of Mrs. Agnes Melndoe, at the age of 71 years. Mrs. Melndoe was born at Barrhead, Scotland, and came to New Zealand 50 years ago. She married Mr. J. S. Melndoe, of Auckland, a builder. For the last 15 years Mr. and Mrs. Melndoe had lived in Te Kuiti. Mrs. Melndoe 'is survived by her husband, four sons and one daughter. MR, G. SHERLOCK* [from our own correspondent] TE AROHA, Wednesday The death has occurred of Mr. George Sherlock, aged 80 years, an old resident of Te Aroha. He came to New Zealand with his parents from Staffordshire in 1862 by tho sailing ship William Miles. As a young man ho spent some time on the Thames goldfields and in 1884 went to Napier, where ho lived for 12 years. He was then appointed manager of Grey and Menzies' bottling plant at To Aroha and remained in this capacity until ho retired a few years ago. Mr. Sherlock served for a term on the To Aroha Borough Council and tho School Conimitteo and was a life member of tho Municipal Band and the Bowling Club. He was a member of tho Manchester Unity of Oddfellows for 62 years. Ho was closely associated with the Mothodist Church and was choirmaster and circuit steward for many years. The funeral yesterday was one of tho largest seen in Te Aroha for a long time. Mr. Sherlock loaves a widow and an adult family. ' MR. C. F. BATTSON [FROM OUR OWN CO HUES PON DENT] / TE AWAMUTU, Wednesday The death occurred at tho Waikato Hospital this morning of one of Te Awamutu's best-known residents, Mr. Charlf* Frederick Battson, aged 62. Born in Dunedin, Mr. Battson caine to tho Auckland province about 30 years ago. He carried on business as tinsmith and plumber at Coromandel and later at Waihi, and established himself at. To Awamutu 21 years ago. He took a prominent part in public affairs here. For several years he was chairman of the school committee, choirmaster of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, trustee of tho Young Men's Institute, and official visitor to Tokanui Mental Hospital. Ho loaves a widow, and ono son.

MR. LEONARD BUTTON [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CO*bbspondent] TAUMARUNUI, Wednesday Tho dcatli occurred at the Taumarunui Hospital of ]\lr. Leonard Hutton, manager of Heather, Roberton and Company's sawmill at National Park. Mr. Hutton, who was 55 years of age, was born at Harrington, Tasmania. He came to New Zealand aftor the Boer War and resided in Taranaki before removing to the King Country, whera he managed different sawmills. Later he wont to Fiji to manage tho Fiji Kauri Timber Company's sawmill and bush. Ho was married in Taumarunui 20 years ago to Miss Margaret Carmody. He is survived by his wife, four sons and three daughters.
