ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS

WORK OF BRITISH PARTIES CONTRIBUTIONS TO SCIENCE "Although it was a Russian who first saw the laud of the Antarctic Continent, and a Norwegian who first planted his country's flag at the South Pole, tho work of British explorers has contributed most to the world's knowledge of that vast area," said Dr. H. L. Willcox', of Auckland, at a meeting of tho local branch of the Overseas League yesterday. Dr. Willcox joined the Bvrd expedition iu 1930 and spent some time in Antarctica. In tho course of his address, Dr. Willcox mentioned the work of various explorers, including Captain Cook, Bellinghausen, Sir ,lames Clark Ross, Captain Scott, Sir Ernest Slytckloton, Amundsen, Sir Douglas Mawson and Admiral Bvrd. He said the greatest achievement of the Byrd expedition was the addition made by its members to tho world's geographical, meteorological and geological knowledge. A great deal of exploration was done by air, and sections of tho coast-lino had been photographed from aeroplanes. Tho explorer who was at present on his way to New Zealand, Mr. Lincoln Ellsworth, had announced his intention of attempting to explore by air a section of Antarctica south of South America, which had not been reached previously, on account of ships being held up by the icc.
