INTER-ISLAND MATCH ' ANNUAL FIXTURE ABANDONED After a series of sub-committee meetings and consideration of a special report from a financial committee, the New Zealand Rugby League Council decided last evening to nbandon the annual North v. South Island fixture. The chairman, Mr. C. A. Snedden, expressed doubt as to whether it was opportune to place the council in the position of bringing a South Island team to AuckW. J. Tnylor said the cost would bo 100 great in view of the large programme of inter-provincinl matches to be controlled by the Auckland L f,a ß uc - ~ , . Mr. R. Doble said it would cost about £3OO to assemble the South Island team, and with the depression so acute, he sunported the decision to abandon the match. The appeal of L. G. Amos, of Christchurch, against his suspension ol 12 months by the Canterbury League was discussed at some length. Correspondence was read from the Canterbury League, the referee and the player concerned. It jvas pointed out that Amos was first suspended for a period of five years, which was later reduced to 12 months. . , , Mr. W. J. Davidson said he had been instructed by Canterbury to oppose the appeal. ~ , Mr. A. Ferguson said the suspension was out of all proportion to the offence. A similar view was taken by Mr. W. J. .Taylor, who said no fear should be shown in dealing with the evidence under review. The chairman said in view of the prevalence of rough play in all codes of football in New Zealand, it was the duty of the council to assist leagues in suppressing illegal play. j It was eventually decided to recommend to the Canterbury League that the suspension be lifted as from July 31. , The Hnwkc's Bay League advised that a Taranaki team would play at Napier on July 29 and that McLean Tark had been secured for the match. , , , A letter forwarded through the Auckland League suggested that the champion club tennis of ench affiliated league should play in nuniml competition.. The system of appointment of referees for representative mutches was criticised by Mr. R. Pollock when the names of three referees were submitted for appointment to the South Auckland y. Auckland game. The speaker said he did not approve of referees having gn.mes in rotation. The best official available should be appointed.' Mr A Ferguson said Messrs. P. Rogers, F. Thompson and S. Billman were the officials forwarded by the New Zealand Referees' Association. Ifc moved thnt Mr. Rogers be appointed. As an amendment, Mr. W. J. Davidson submitted Mr. M. -Welherill's name and asked for a rulinsr whether it was in order to appoint an official other than one submitted by the Referees' Association. The chairman said he saw no reason why other names could not be suggested. On behalf of South Auckland, Mr. W. J. Taylor submitted the name of Mr. W. Simpson. Mr. P. Ropers was eventually appointed to control the game.
