SMALL FARMS SCHEME
SELECTION OF SETTLERS STATEMENT BY COMMISSIONER [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT] DARGAVILLE, Monday "It is not tho intention of the hoard to place any men on impossible propositions," said Mr. O. N. Campbell, Commissioner of Small Farms, when passing through Dargaville. "The board will have to bo assured that tho incoming tenant has somo chance of success," said Mr. Campbell. "There are hundreds of men looking for suitable farms in all parts of tho Dominion, and tho board will bo very strict in making its choico of settlers. Tho board will erect homes and sliods and hand over u properly-equipped farm. Tho cutting of properties into small holdings will go a long way in fighting tho ragwort menace by moro intensive cultivation and tho subdivision of paddocks into smaller areas." Mr. Campbell said tho Small Farms Board at a recent meeting approved tho scheino propounded for closer settlement in tho Tutamoo district. Ho hoped soon to seo a camp established at Tutamoo of men who would bo engaged in logging up and clearing tho land, in co-operation with the settlers nnrl under tho control of tho Puhlic Works Dopartmont. Tho settlers had given tho schomo whole-hearted support. They would give ft portion of their holdings to tho board in exchango for improvements effected. He was convinced that closer settlement would solve the problem of settlers in the Tutamoo district, and he looked forward to the scliome being enlarged to include tho whole of tho area in tho vicinity of Tutamoo and Donnelly's Crossing.
