Prior to that Patterson had gained a fall in the fourth round with a press following his thunderbolt blow, which sent Walker hard to the mat. Although the Town Hall was noft filled, there was a large attendance, and the crowd appeared to thoroughly enjoy the contest, which was strenuous throughout. The referee, Mr. H. C. Sidford, had occasion to warn both wrestlers for illegalities, Patterson being spoken to several times. The best amateur bout was that between Kenneth and Higgins, the crowd cheering both' at the end of the, fourth round, an extra one ordered by the referee after each had secured a fall. Patterson's weight was announced at 16st. and that of AValker at 14st. 51b. Patterson was the early aggressor, a short-arm scissors, roughly applied, giving Walker trouble, but he eventually broke it by rising to his feet. Patterson was toppled heavily over the ropes when he held i hem to avoid being lifted. At the opening of the second round Patterson was thrown through the ropes twice, and, on returning to the ring, he punched Walker on the jaw and then used the ropes to apply leverage against Walker's head. An..exchange of punches brought a warning to both from the referee. Patterson concentrated on headlocks until fie was hurled through the ropes. Patterson was hooted by the crowd and warned by the referee for pulling his opponent's ears. First Fall to Patterson Patterson hit the mat hard when thrown with a reverse headlock, and then he had his face massaged with Walker's boot when he was in an arm strangle. Patterson missed with a slam but applied a body scissors, Walker breaking it and securing a body press, the ropes saving Patterson. Patterson was again cautioned at tha commencement of the fourth round, this time for poking with his thumbs. Walker angled for a hammerlock, but was unsuccessful. Patterson secured a standing wristhold from a back position, jerked his opponent suddenly backwards, at the same time applying his thunderbolt blow on the face, and Walker hit the mat hard. Patterson had no difficulty in applying a body press. Walker just failed with a hammerlock early in the fifth, and then hia legs proved too short for a crucifix. Patterson was next unsuccessful when trying for a Boston crab. The sixth round had not long been in progress before Walker heavily back-loop slammed his opponent, who lay motionless on the mat throughout the interval, and was unable to resume at the gong. - . .. - Amateur Preliminaries Welter-weight.—H.
