LATE TACKLING METHODS OFFSIDE RULE IN LINE-OUT Attention was drawn at a pieeting of the Auckland llughy Referees'' Association last evening to the fact that a considerable amount of late tackling was noticed in recent matches and referees'were asked to deal rigidly with this breach. Mr. J. G. C. Wales presided over an attendance of 50 members. Arising frpm questions dealt, with at the Inst meeting of tile New Zealand Rugby Referees' Association in Wellington, it was resolved to send to Wellington the following points relative to offside ill the lineout:—The ball is thrown in from touch and an A player receives the ball in the line out, (1) A B player who is definitely retiring toward his own sido immediately tackles the A player, who receives the ball. Should B be ruled offside"? (2) If the A player passes the ball back to one of his own Bide and B intercepts the pass, should B be ruled offside? An interesting lecture on the advantage i rule was given by Mr. A. A. Lucas. He pointed out that this rule was the most important with which a referee had to deal. The application of the rule made a tremendous difference to the run of the play in a game, and- the judicious use of it should be the ideal of every referee. A discussion took place on the number of penalty kicks that were being awarded by referees in certain games this season. It was pointed out, that these were duo mainly to either lack of knowledge of the laws or deliberate breaches by the players. Dr. Briggs said that in the Oxford v. Cambridge match prior to his, leaving England no occasion arose during the game on which it was necessary for the referee to blow his whistle for a penalty kick. The examination board reported that Mr. Pepper had passed his oral test.
