RELIEF PROSECUTIONS j [rltOM oun own coruespondknt] HAMILTON, Mondny Charges of making misleading statements to an officer of tho Labour Department. wero preferred against Arthur Alfred Welch and August William Wilmshurst in the Hamilton Polico Court to-day. Mr. F. Wilson, lor tho department, said that Welch had stated that his wife was living at home and that ho was supporting her. Actually she had left him and was maintaining herself. In co user]nolico of (statement, ho had received greater relief than lie was entitled to. Mr. R. D. McKarland said that defendant's wife had left him, and he expected her to return nt any time. Defendant Was an uneducated man and might have been confused when filling ill the form. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay the costs. Oil behalf of Wilmshurst. Mr. J. F. Strang said that defendant had a largo family and ho succumbed to tho temptation to state that one child aged 17J years Mas under 16. Tho child was not employed and was dependent on defendant. The magistrate, Mr. S L. Paterson, said tho penalty was inadequate, but defendant would bo fined £2 and costs.
