THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE

QUIET TONE PREVAILS

Following exceptional activity in the past few days, there was a quiet tone z in the investment market on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. No sharp movements occurred in levels and business was transacted at substantially unchanged rates. Offers for State .Joans were maintained on a steady basis, the supply position also showing little change. A parcel of 1955 4 per cent stock was taken 5s higher ut £IOO 10s. Inquiry for banks was limited, in spite of the fact that quotations were more widespread. Commercials had early s,alo unchanged at 16s 3d and 16s 4d, after which offers rose by 2d to. 16s 4d. Quotations at 16s 5d showed a rise of Id. For Nationals of New Zealand, which are paying a reduced dividend, previous offers at £3 17s were withdrawn; a seller appearing at £3 18s. Appearance of a. seller in English, Scottish and Australian at £5 Is 6d caused a firming of Is to £4 19s in the demand. New South Wales were neglected. Nationals of Australasia, contributing, were taken 4s 6d higher at £6 7s, and a sale in Unions unchanged/ at £8 lis 6d was accompanied by a concession on sellers' part. New Zealands were firmer, offers advancing by 3d to 47s lCkl, with holders 6d ligher at 48s 6d. Unchanged business was done in the insurance group. There was a shading in quotations for Nationals, which were released twjee unchanged at 17s. A plight forward movement in levels accompanied two sales of New Zealands at 49s 9d, also an unchanged price. No strong buying movement was in evidence in the general sections. Golds-brough-Morts were a shade'firmer, but other Australian issues attracted little attention. New Zealand Breweries were done 6d higher at 33s 6d and a further parcel was taken at 33s 9d. On sale at 645, Kempthorne-Prossers dropped by Is 3d. There were two sales in New Zealand Newspapers 6d higher at 265, business in New Zealand Paper Mills passing unchanged at 275. A parcel of Waihis was secured un* changed at 225, and Mount Lyells gained Id on sale at 22s sd. There was a sale in Waitahus at 7s Id, also unchanged.
