WELLINGTON'S POSITION

MORE MONEY TO BE EXPENDED

The Wellington City Council last week adopted the estimates for the c>;r- , rent .financial year. Generally, the amounts allocated to the various committees are about on the same level . as last year, though works and reserves are to receive more this year. The total rates demand is £505,000, as against £508,000 last year. The estimated receipts for this finan- * rial year, said the Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, were £693,082, as against £684,773 last year, but included in the receipts for the year just ended was the balance of £24,257 carried forward from last year. The estimated expenditure , for interest and other fixed nmounts beyond the control of commit..tees was £494,687, leaving a balance . available for allocation of £198,395. The estimates provide for £15,000 for unemployment relief. Under the present arrangement with the Government the council has to carry 1500 men, and all men above that number the Government carries. At present the number • of men on city relief works is 3800. , The teost of carrying 1500 men is £15,000, and it was suggested that £SOOO be taken from tho Electricity Department and the remainder from the general fund.

The amount available for expenditure this vear is £10,260 more than was expended last year.
