MACHINE-GUN GANG TRAGIC RESCUE EPISODE (Received June IS, 6.35 p.m.) NEW YORK, June 17 A message from Kansas City states that four peace officers and an escaped prisoner wore shot clown and killed by a machine-gun gang to-day in front of the Union railway depot. It is thought tho gunmen were attempting to rescue the prisoner and accidentally killed him. There was a heavy cross fire between two machineguns and rifles which lasted only a few seconds.

The officers were returning the prisoner to gaol at the time. Tin* attack was so sudden that they had no time to return the fire. The attackers escaped in a motor-car. It is recalled that the prisoner who was killed was a close associate of the man Lansing, who was the ringleader in the prison escape of May 30. The police believe to-dav's incident was part of a plot by south-western desperadoes, who have terrorised Kansas of late.
