WINTER COMPETITIONS SAVIDAN WINS STEEPLECHASE There was a large attendance of club supporters and a fine muster of athletes at the Outer Domain on Saturday afternoon, when tho Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club held its eeveifth of the 1933 series of winter competitions. K«en competition was witnessed, the sprint race going to the youngest member of the club, N Barton, who is only 14 years old, while J. W. Savidan, the British Empire champion. won the steeplechase from scratch, defeating the greatly-improved S. Allen by eight yards. Marked improvement was shown by eome of the competitoi-s in the field events. Results are as follows: • 4000 Yards Steeplechase.—J. p W. Savidan (scr), ISm 54 2-£s, 1; S. Allen (455), 15m 675, 2; K. I'inson' (30s), 16m 4s, 3; J. Dunn (50s), 16m ss, 4; A. G. Smith (140s), 16m 9s. 5; A. Clark (1655), 16m 17s, 6. Twenty-three cflmpeted, tho course being over four laps of 1000 yards each. About 350 yards from home Savidan had reached the front, and was given rousing applause rts ho ran past the stand. In the run home Allen, Pinson and Dunn challenged gamely, but tho champion went on to win by eight yards from Allen, with Pinson 20 yards away third, and Dunn closo up fourth. Time, 15m 54 Q-sa. Savidan's net time was 12m 54 2-ss, the fastest of the race, while Pineon registered 13m 345; and Allen 13m 425. 75 Yards Handicap.—First heat: H. T. J. McNiel, 14yds, 1; E. M. Horan, sjyds, 2; W.
