PROPOSED SPEEDWAY

LAKE GEORGE SCHEME

INVITATION TO "BLUEBIRD"

The speedway executive formed at Goulburn, New South "Wales, in connection with Lake George, has sent details of the lake bed's suitability as a speedway to Sir Malcolm Campbell, the British motor speed record-holder. In responso to a recent letter, the executive's communication, written by the chairman, Mr. Lee Hunt, informs Sir Malcolm that it would appear that the lake is "made to order" for his requirements, except that in its natural condition the surface probably would not be quite hard enough for the at its high speeds. Experiments had proved, however, that it could very easily be made so, as the surface became very hard with .rolling, especially if it was rolled when dampened or just after rain. This condition might be made more permanent if the surface was lightly top-dressed with heavy sand or very fine gravel rolled into it.

Sir Malcolm Campbell's opinion was invited in regard to a proposal that the surface might be improved by spraying with a tar or bitumen preparation. Lake George, it is emphasised, appears to bo strong, and suitable in everything that a beach track lacks. For instance/ it would never vary except with very heavy rain, which would have a tendency to improve it. There are no shells, and the mountains protect it from winds.

"As your visit would have such a tremendous appeal, and all conditions are so verj- favourable," states the letter, "there surely will he some way to help . the finance. With proper management, and with the Government behind \is —and there is no doubt that it is sympathetic—there should be £IO,OOO in your visit for someone or something. You would take very little risk if you were to pack up the famous 'Bluebird' and put it on the first available boat, and come out with it to Sydney. My executive, I believe, would be prepared to guarantee to havo the 100 per cent track you asked for ready by the time of your arrival."
