WINTER MEAT SUPPLY
HELPING RELIEF WORKERS More than 400 people purchased meat: at the depot in Karangahnpe Boad yesterday. The depot, which is coin ducted by the llev. T. Halliday, under; an arrangement with the Unemployment Board since last winter, provides meat at verv low rates for the * families of relief workers. During the summer months the demand decreased, but now that the cold weather has set in it haa been found necessary to keep the depot open onj three days-each week. On Wednesday, and Thursday the supply is confined to beef. This meat is purchased from R. and W. Hellaby, Limited, at ai special rate, and is sold to the families of relief workers at an average of lid a }>ound. /On the two days the beef sold totals ahout 10001b. Mutton only; is sold on Fridays, and this is drawn' from tli 2 stocks held in the cool stores ou behalf of the Unemployment Board* This meat is paid for out of the receipts of the depot, and is retailed ati a flat rate of ljd a pound. Yesterday the sales aggregated 20001b. Itk is expected there will be an increasing demand during the next few months as more relief workers are taking advantage of the service. Vegetables from the relief workers* plots in the. Domain were distributed free to purchasers of meat yesterday,the principal supply being parsnips and swede turnips. The purchasers also received an issue of apples from part of the gift of 50 cases donated by the Henderson Fruitgrowers' Association to the relief fund inaugurated by ths Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe.
