LONG FILM CAREER

JEAN HERSHOLT'S RECORD Jean Hersholt, one of the most distinguished actors on the screen who was Been in " Grand Hotel," arrived in London recently for a holiday before passing on to his native Denmark. Mr. Hersholt has been so constantly in demand that he has ben under contract for of the 20 years he has been in Hollywood. Altogether he has played in 380 films since he took part in the first Danish production in 1904, beginning with Christ roles, turning to villains and ending up with character work. The last picture Mr. Hersholt made ,has proved so topical that it is having < enormous success as the American " Cavalcade." Originally called " The Beer Baron," it was rechristened " The Song of the Eagle." The story begins in 1910 and ends in 1933 with a forecast of what would happen when beer came back. Mr. Hersholt looks back on " Greed " as the greatest film in which he has ever played, and he considers that his niost memorable day in Hollywood was when lie saw that film at its original length of 43 reels. He began seeing it at l 0 in the morning, and did not leave the theatre until 8.20 p.m. " Greed " was ultimately shown to the public in ten reels. Mr. Hersholt is a painter, a graduate of the Art School of Copenhagen. Ho is also a book collector who lias the finest collection of first editions in Hollywood. He went to Hollywood because he was sent to the United States to organise the Danish section of the San Francisco Exhibition, and he has now been there for nearly 20 years. For 19 of these years he has been hap/pily married to the same wife, which he claims to be a record in Hollywood, and which the film colony regards as a miracle.
