MAN'S LONELY JOB
LIFE ON DESERTED ISLAND ■■ The loneliest ]ob in Great Britain has been filled by a Scot who has been appointed by the Earl of Dumfries to act as caretaker of the island of St. Kilda during the next few months. It is one of the queerest of occupations, for his duties consist mainly of ensuring that nobody—tourists or others from passing ships—interferes with the island's seabird colony. Lord Dumfries, who is a keen naturalist, purchased the " lone isle " over a year ago, some time after tha islanders had evacuated it, and is determined to protect St. Kilda's seafowl. His representative landed in April, and will remain there, acting as watchman until October. He will thus be alone on St. Kilda, witn its deserted village and decaying houses, until the first steamer sailing from, the Clyde is. due to call aft the island with sightseers.
