"OLD SALT'S" FRAUDS

Alleged to have represented himself to landladies as the captain of a steamer, James King, aged 80, a homeless seaman, was lately charged at Southampton with obtaining food and lodgings by false pretences. King presented a debonair figure in court. Wearing a light grey suit, coloured tie and spats over patent leather shoes, his weather-beaten face was crowned by snow-white hair, and he regarded the magistrates through hornrimmed glasses. The police stated that King had a bad record in crime, which started 21 year ago, and there were 22 previous convictions against him for false pretences, the sentences including three terms >of three years' penal servitude. He was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment.
