SCHOOL CONCERT

PERFORMANCE BY GIRLS EXCELLENT PRESENTATION A well-chosen selection of items was presented by girls of tho Auckland Girls' Grammar School at ft concert in aid of school funds, which was hold in the Town Hall concert chamber last evening before a largo and appreciative gathering of parents and friends. The programme included musical and dramatic items, dancing and drill, and in every case the girls acquitted themselves most creditably. Tlie programme opened with an overture " Spring's Message " (Fucik) by the school orchestra, the item being rendered in such a manner as to reflect much credit on such young performers. Later the orchestra played " Melody in F " (Rubenstein) and " Dance of the Little Robins " (R ayners). Musical excerpts from " A Country Girl " was the next item given, and in this an attractive and colourful scene was presented on the stage by the girls and " boys " in the gay folk costumes of the period, while the entrance of the Rajah and Princess of Bong with their bodyguard was impressively done. Both tho solo and chorns work in this number were excellent and received well-merited applause. A series of sketch " snapshots adapted from tho work of Stephen Leacock and orated after the best method of 1876, proved a most popular item, the exaggerated melodramatic acting of the young players being excellently done. Scenes from Lewis Carroll s " Alice in Wonderland " was another well-presented number performed by 26 girls, including attendants at the Court of Hearts, soldiers and jurymen. Scenes from this well-known story were faithfully carried out. by a well-trained cast of girls, the performance being one of the most popular on the programme. An exhibition of Swedish drill _ by selected pupils from the fifth and sixth forms was another item presented, the perfect timing and excellent deportment of the girls being a, most attractive feature of this number. A Grecian scarf dance entitled "Musical Moments" No. 4, by four girls, concluded an excellent and most entertaining programme. The music and sinking were conducted by MrsSutherland, the plays by _ Miss Bruce, and the drill and dancing by Miss Gurr, the latter also acting as stage manager.
