FIGHT AGAINST CANCER

RESEARCH IN DOMINION INCREASING KNOWLEDGE GOOD WORK BEING DONE [»Y TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] "WELLINGTON, Friday Satisfactory progress in tho search for the cause and cure of cancer was reported at to-day's meeting of tho New Zealand branch of tho Empire Cancer Campaign Society. The Wellington division and the central committee met at the same time. Dr. J. S. Elliott, of Wellington, who presided, said New Zealand was playing its part in the world-wide cancer campaign and the world had learned more about cancer in tho last 20 years than in the 30 centuries which covered the recorded history of medicine. The knowledge of the causes of cancer was being gradually crystallised and it was not improbable that successful treatment would be discovered before the cause. At present, early cases of cancer were often curablo and hopeless cases could be greatly relieved, pain greatly lessened and life prolonged. Dr. A. M. Begg, the society's medical research officer, submitted a report upon tho work carried out at tho cancer research laboratory, Dunedin. He said it was inevitable that the investigations should be of extreme complexity and difficulty. Several months might elapse before any result, positive or negative, was achieved. The investigator's courage and tenacity were taxed to tho extreme. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Society, Dr. Elliott was reelected president, Sir Louis Barnett (Otago) and Sir Hugh Acland (Canterbury), vice-presidents, and Mr. R. Darroch secretary and treasurer. Sir Louis Barnett paid a high tribute to tho research work being carried out by the society. It was only right, ho said, that the public should know that great v/ork was being carried on and that good use was being made of tho funds generously subscribed by the poople of tho Dominion. It was decided that tho next annual meeting of tho society should be held in Christcliurch.
