CATTLE AT WAITANGI
PROPOSED RED POLL HERD INTEREST OF ASSOCIATION [by telegraph—own correspondent] PALMERSTON" NORTH, Wednesday A proposal to establish a head of Red Polls at the Wa'itangi National Trust Board's estate, Bay of Islands, was discussed at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Red Poll Cattle Breeders' Association. The president, Mr. J. W. Harding, of Waipukurau, stated that donations of 11 heifer calves had been promised. The Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe, had offered to provide a bull, but it was suggested that the association should* find the female cattle. The secretary, Mr. L. J. Wild, ot Feilding, stated it was proposed to farm 1000 acres of laud given by His Excellencv. The suggestion had been made that a Red Poll herd should be established there. Lord Bledisloe had generously offered to bring a bull out from England. The opinion was expressed that any cattle sent forward by members should be fully representative of the best standard of the breed. The association decided, on the motion of Mr. H. B. Hole, of Hawke s Bay, to give its approval to tho scheme. - , , f Thirty heifers were required, MrWild stated. Superficially, nothing but good for the breed could come from the scheme, but it was a question of the suitability of the country tor tho cattle. Nothing was known concerning the methods of management which would be adopted for the herd Offers of donations by breeders in the room brought the number of Jiciter calves available to 20.
