PURCHASING SUPPLIES CO-OPERATION OF RETAILERS [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday Valuable work is being done in New Plymouth by the Self-Help Club, established for the purpose of assisting the needy by making their resources go as far as possible in the purchase of necessaries. Club membership allows purchase through channels which, it is estimated, allow £1 to go as far as 28s. The membership has increased rapidly. Hix weeks ago it was 78, and now it is 300, embracing half the unemployed men in New Plymouth. A levy of one penny a week is made on members for office expenses. By membership, relief workers are able to buy all necessaries at practically cost price. Excellent support has been given the j scheme by retailers, and most shops are available for members to make purchases. In addition, a boot-repairing department has been opened, customers having to pay only the cost of materials. Five unemployed tradesmen are engaged at various times during the week in making repairs. AFFAIBS AT TAURANGA WORK ON THE SHOWGROUNDS [from our own correspondent] TATJRANGA, Wednesday A deputation from the Unemployed Workers' Association waited on the Tauranga Unemployment Committee regarding the cessation of work by men employed on the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's showground at Judea. The work is being carried out hy the Public Works Department, the Agricultural and Pastoral Association making a contribution of about £6OO. The deputation asked that representations be made to the Unemployment Board that the payment should bo in accordance with the No. 5 scheme, at a rate of 10s a day. and not under the contract system at present in eperation. The committee decided to adhere to its previous decision recommending the men to giye the job a trial for a week. It was decided to ask the Unemployment Board to increase the relief allocation for the district. The Commissioner of Unemplovment wrote advising that the board had purchased some mutton and would be prepared to supply it at Id per lb. ex trucks, Tauranga, for subsequent issue or sale to the unemployed. The board's office should be advised of the number of carcases required weekly in order that arrangements might be made with the meat work 3 for issue. The matter of the requisition and distribution of the mutton was referred to the Mayor's Fund Relief Committee. CAMPS FOR MARRIED MEN PROTEST IN GREYMOUTH [by telegraph—press association] GKETMOUTH. Wednesday A meeting of the wives of married unemploved men was held yesterday at Greymouth, when a protest was made to the Government against relief camps for married men. It was pointed out that the Unemployment Committee at Greymouth so far had received no notification regarding camps. However, it was clear from the attitude of the board regarding other centres that it was only a matter of time before such notification would bo issued. SUPPLIES OF BOOTS DISTRIBUTION COMMENCED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday Supplies of boots for relief workers under the first orders placed with manufacturers by the Unemployment Board are beginning to come to hand, and the work of distributing them to the various centres is commencing. The task is one of some magnitude, and, in view of the board's desire to I provide for the most necessitous cases first, others who are eligible will have to wait until sufficient supplies are [ available to enable a general distribution to be made.
